YOUR HEALTH, Your Skin:
What you should know about wearing sunscreen:
Sunscreen of SPF 15 or higher should be applied everyday you are outside for more then 20 minutes, remember harmful ultraviolet rays can pass through clouds and can even reflect off from snow. This will prevent premature aging and skin cancer, in addition allow some repair of damaged skin. You should apply approximately one ounce of sunscreen for each application, roughly the size of a full shot glass. Making sure you apply it on the areas of the body that are exposed to the elements (face, ears, hands, etc.). The reason you should use SPF 15 or higher is because it protects against a broad spectrum of UVA and UVB wavelengths. UVA rays are the wavelengths that are contributed to causing wrinkles, skin aging, and skin cancer. While UVA rays cause sunburns and skin cancer. SPF does not accurately provide the protection strengths of the sunscreen; rather it measures the absorption levels of harmful ultraviolet rays. For example SPF of 15 indicates 93% absorption and an SPF of 2 equals 50% absorption. FDA requires that all sunscreen to be stable and at their original strength for a minimum of three years.
How to keep your skin healthy and clean:
When applying skin care products keep in mind that there are a variety of factors that determine if the particular product will work correctly. Skin care products can fail to work due to incorrect application. Your skin should be clean, moist, and warm for maximum absorption. The best time to apply therefore is after a warm shower or bath; note the water should be warm, not hot, because excessive heat accelerates the skin aging process. When using the product you should feel a tingling sensation, this is because the active ingredient is penetrating the Epidermis (first layer of your skin). For the best results you should wash with a cleanser in the morning, followed by a toner and moisturizer with sunscreen. At nighttime wash with cleanser, gently exfoliate, followed by a toner and heavier moisturizer. Avoid over drying your skin and using regular soaps on your face. Do not wipe your skin dry after cleansing instead gently dab with a towel. Facial scrubs should not be used more then four times a week.
